Understanding Tanzania's climate to plan your perfect safari adventure

Tanzania weather differs from region to region, but there is always a great time to travel. Weather in coastal areas is the hottest and most humid, while the north and highlands are cooler because of altitude. Temperatures vary between 22°C and 31°C throughout the year.

Tanzania Weather: The Seasons

Wet Season

The wet season runs from the end of October through December, and again from late March to early June — referred to as the short and long rains. Tropical rains mostly start late afternoon and continue overnight.

Best for: lush landscapes & birding

Dry Season

The dry season offers fantastic wildlife viewing as animals gather around waterholes. The weather is pleasant and sunny with minimal rain — the most popular time for safaris.

Best for: big game & migration

Can I Go on Safari During the Rainy Season?

Absolutely yes. Did you know that National Geographic and Discovery choose the rainy season to shoot their wildlife documentaries in Tanzania?

Nature is colourful, the grass is lush, beautiful flowers grow, animals find plenty of food, temperatures are cool, and the parks are far less crowded.

Another benefit of travelling in rainy season is the lower cost of safaris and accommodation.

Important Note

The main disadvantages of travel during the wet season are that some accommodations are closed and road conditions in southern Tanzania parks can be poor.

How Does Tanzania Weather Affect Wildlife?

The rain makes for a lush landscape with a high concentration of animals — plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife at their finest. During the rainy seasons, animals are more active, with an abundance of food and fresh water.

Many of our safari guests say the rainy season offers a more intimate safari experience. For bird lovers, it's a fantastic time — lots of migratory birds arrive.
